Profile of the programme and key learning outcomes
The Czech as a foreign language field of study aims to provide graduates with:
- thorough preparation in theoretical subjects (phonetics, morphology, syntax, lexicology, word formation, stylistics, discourse, pragmalinguistics, psycholinguistics, the history of the culture and literature of English speaking countries, awareness of the socio-cultural background of students in courses). This theoretical preparation (and native speaker competences or competences similar to these) forms the basis for understanding both the peculiarities of the Czech language system as an inflectional language and the peculiarities of its socio-cultural use (i.e. the peculiarities of the sound of the language, its lexical, morphological and syntactical side, its pragmalinguistic peculiarities of the Czech intracultural and intercultural communication).
- Both theoretical and practical awareness of methodology for the effective management of the teaching of adults (which includes assessing the language needs and level of a particular group of students/individuals; preparing a study program suitable for learner needs and abilities; clearly defining lesson aims and selecting effective methods and ways to achieve these aims; an informed ability to choose suitable and effective study materials, and create their own materials; managing lessons with reference to age characteristics and learning styles of individuals; assessing learning progress by both formal and informal methods; providing course participants with quality feedback).
- Functional knowledge of another foreign language (at A2/B1/B2 levels of the European Reference Frame for Languages) that will help the graduate to be flexible and find employment.
The number of lessons for individual subjects, the division of subjects into study modules and their focus on the necessary theoretical basis and practical needs of a foreign language teacher, correspond to the characteristics of the graduate.
